24: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM (702)

Previously on 24: Jack was supoenaed by the Senate, then the FBI, where he teamed up with foxy redhead agent Renee. Tony came back from the dead and is now working for a home-grown terrorist cell that just took navigational control of a commercial aircraft. Jack and Renee tracked down a lead only to have him killed by Tony's sniper. A bunch of other stuff happened too. Read the recap.

Air Traffic Control. They're still trying to get through to GSA117 without any luck. The head controller has people look for ways to contact them visually and get passenger cell phone numbers. Except passengers are supposed to keep their cell phones off during a flight, so I don't see how that's going to help. One controller has found who's controlling GSA117 and plays a recording of Tony telling the plane to drop altitude. Head Controller calls the FBI and lets Agent Ass know what's going on. Meanwhile, in the dingy hideout, Masters has taken over the navigation and is telling the plane to change course. The pilot questions the change for a second, but Masters feeds him a bullshit story about weather changes and they accept it and change course.

FBI. Janis tells Agent Ass that NSA is trying to figure out where the point of entry into the firewall is, but they're not optimistic. They also don't know how to get them out since they haven't seen anything like this before.

Shecter's Apartment Building. Jack and Renee exit on to the street where the backup team is surrounding the building the sniper's in. Jack says he's got the alley and jogs off in that direction. Renee contacts Agent Ass over the radio and they fill each other in on what the situations are. When AA learns that Shecter was killed, he quietly asks if Renee's okay. They're totally sleeping together. And frankly, I'm disappointed in you, Renee. You can do so much better. AA tells Renee that he's sending over a couple of SWAT teams to sweep the building. she meets up with Jack in the alley and he tells her that they have a problem. The only way Tony could have had a sniper in position so fast and have called right after the shooting is if there's a leak in the FBI. Ah, yes, it's time for the seasonal game of Who's That Mole? Place your bets now, people. Renee is offended that Jack would think any of her people would be a mole and curtly tells him that she brought him in to assist, not co-manage the operation. Jack argues that she should be careful who she trusts when an FBI agent stops him and asks for his gun. Renee makes no move to stop this. Jack hands over the weapon without a fight. Not that it matters. He just attacked a guy with a pen; he doesn't exactly need a gun. Renee orders a nearby Agent Kilner to put Jack in his vehicle until she gets back. Jack obediently climbs into the back seat and stares pensively out the window. Renee gets a status report that the backup team has all exists covered and that SWAT will be along shortly to sweep the building room-by-room. Inside the building, the sniper is finding all his exists blocked by FBI agents.

FBI. Agent Ass has Janis coordinate with the SWAT teams sweeping the building, then moves on to Sean and asks if NSA has any idea how Tony got control of the plane. Sean says they don't and one of the guys Latham worked with says that based on the way the firewall was breached, there's no way to regain contact with the plane. Agent Ass calls the Head Controller and they share the fact that they don't have anything with each other. The phone call basically serves to pass the scene over to Head Controller and Air Traffic Control. One of the controllers can hear what Tony's telling the plane and reports that he's just landing them on another runway. HC figures it's too simple and asks what planes are on approach near GSA117. There's nothing, but suddenly all their screens freeze up.

Dingy Hideout. Tony tells Masters to send another airplane into an intersecting course with GSA117. He then calls Head Controller, who has someone call the FBI to trace the call as soon as he realizes who it is. He asks Tony what he wants. He replies, "I want you to see what we can do." He has HC pull up the surveillance cameras at JFK Airport. The controllers watch in horror as the two planes head towards each other. Tony is really lucky that it's a foggy day and the planes can't see each other. At the last second, Tony instructs GSA117 to pull up and the planes narrowly avoid a collision. Air Traffic Control also gains back their screens and communications. Tony calls back the HC and tells him that this was just a demonstration. Next time it will be for real. 9:10:35.

9:16:36. The sniper looks out a window and sees the SWAT teams arriving. We cut to a docked boat as a black sedan pulls up. A man gets out and pushes a buzzer on a gate blocking the ramp to the boat. He indentifies himself as Emerson and we see Masters hit a button to let him in. So Tony's dingy hideout is on a boat. Tony tells Emerson to get the module ready and goes to pay Latham a visit. He orders a nearby lackey to uncuff him and get him cleaned up. Emerson comes in and greets Tony, who reports that the testing of the module went perfectly. He presents the module to Emerson in a padded case. Emerson asks after Latham and Tony says that he got him to a place where he'll do whatever Emerson wants, like he'd be good for anything. The poor man is basically a quivering pile of terrified goo at this point. Emerson pulls Tony aside and asks how the FBI found Shecter. Tony says they brought in Jack, to which Emerson nods and says he knows who Jack is. Tony assures him that he'll take care of Jack just like he took care of Shecter. Emerson says, "I don't want you distracted from this new job." Tony's all, yeah, about that.... what exactly is this job? Emerson says that Tanner (the sniper) will fill Tony in on the details when he arrives. Tony wants to know why Emerson can't just tell him. Emerson uses the terrorist cell explanation of the less anyone knows, the safer everyone is. But something about the way Tony's asking questions leads me to believe that Jack might be right about the undercover thing. I don't know how, since Renee said he's not employed by any government agency, but his behavior says undercover to me. Emerson reassures Tony by saying that this next job will be their last and Tony relents.

White House. Lurch is briefing the Press Secretary on what she can say about the situation in Sangala. She can't mention when they plan to invade, but he wants her to mention the President is meeting with former Prime Minister Matobo and that Taylor sees him as General Candyman's successor. Lurch watches the press conference when he gets a call about what happened at JFK. Meanwhile, Taylor is meeting with Matobo. She brings up the topic of not killing General Candyman, but trying him in a court of law. Matobo seems hesitant at first, but agrees. Lurch calls Taylor out into the hallway and briefs her on the near-miss. Taylor calls the situation unacceptable. "We should be able to unplug these bastards." Um, that's not exactly how technology works, President Taylor. She orders all non-essential air traffic grounded and tells Lurch to set up a meeting with DoD, FBI, and Homeland Security.

Dingy Hideout. Masters takes a phone call and hands it over to Tony. It's Tanner calling to say he's trapped in the Columbia building. He gives Tony his exact position, which is in the basement. Out in the alley, Jack is still waiting in the car. Agent Kilner strikes up a conversation with Jack and tells him that what the Senate hearing is making him go through is wrong. Jack disagrees and says it's better if everything comes out in the open. "[The people we protect] deserve to know the truth. Then they can decide how far they want to let us go." Agent Kilner still thinks that Jack doesn't deserve this kind of treatment after everything he's done for the country. Jack sort of nods and says thank you, like he's uncomfortable with the compliment.

Columbia Building Basement. An Agent Leonard is sweeping the basement. Tanner is hidden behind a pillar. They spot each other and point their weapons until Leonard says that he was sent by Tony to get him out. I guess Jack was right about that leak. Leonard hands Tanner his FBI windbreaker and the keys to a car parked in the alley.

In the car, Jack asks Agent Kilner if he could step out of the car for some air. He agrees, but tells Jack to stay close. Jack hops out and starts wandering around. Renee immediately spots him and goes striding after him just as Tanner walks out of the building in his FBI jacket. Renee stops Jack and tells him about Tony's demonstration. Jack is ignoring Renee in favor of Tanner. He notices Tanner's hiking boots are different from the black shoes all the other FBI agents are wearing. He points Tanner out to Renee and has her check the deployment grid, saying that one of her people helped Tanner get through the perimeter. She checks the grid and confirms Tanner's not one of their agents. She wants to have him followed and calls for someone to send after him. Jack stops her and points out that she can't trust anyone until she knows how badly the bureau has been compromised. he suggests following Tanner themselves. She agrees and commandeers a sedan from another agent. And...she's letting Jack drive? Seriously? Okay, then. 9:28:26.

9:34:26. In a fancy command center, Emerson arrives with the case holding the CIP device and Latham. He presents it to a man watching the news. "Effective demonstration, wouldn't you say Mr. Dubaku?" Dubaku is pleased with how it turned out and says General Candyman will be pleased as well. A man who seems to be Dubaku's liason or something suggests that now is a good time to make the White House aware of their demands. Dubaku agrees.

Oval Office. A guy is reporting that so far flights have been landing without incident, but they could be controlled at any time. Taylor asks if the NSA is working on a way to get them out of the firewall and keep them out, but the guy explains that re-engineering the code could take weeks or months. She moves on to another guy and asks what systems are vulnerable. First on the list is the power grid. Next the water treatment and distribution centers. He goes on, but Lurch gets another call (he's very popular today), and we follow him out of the room. The call is from Handsome Secret Service Agent, reporting that Henry is on his way to confront his son's girlfriend. HSSA has decided that Henry's obsession with Roger's death has gotten out of hand and the President needs to know what's going on. Lurch thanks him for coming forward and returns to the Oval Office.

FBI. Agent Ass is talking on the phone to someone higher up than him, saying they have the situation under control. He hangs up and Janis reports that Agent Dornan is still sweeping the building but he feels the sniper isn't in there. Oh, and, by the way, you guys wouldn't happen to know where Renee is, would you? Janis says that Renee left ten minutes ago and didn't log her destination. Agent Ass pauses for a moment and asks about Jack. He went with her.

In the car, Renee's cell phone rings. She sees Agent Ass' number on the caller ID. Jack tells her not to answer it, but she protests that he'll get worried about her or suspicious and answers her phone. He asks her why she left the scene and she answers that she's following up on a lead. She makes up a terrible story about a serial number on a weapon. Even I know that's not something you need to do personally and with a second person. Agent Ass knows something's up. He asks if Jack got her involved in something. Renee asks him to trust her and promises to fill him in if they find out anything. She hangs out and takes a moment to freak out about lying to her boss. Jack's only concern is if he bought it. She says yes.

FBI. Agent Ass ask Janis is Renee's com unit is active. He asks her to trace where it is. Janis wonders why he can't just call her and ask. Hee. AA just tells her to do it.

While they tail Tanner, Renee decides to make small talk. She asks Jack how far he was planning to go with Shecter. Jack simply says, "You said to do whatever it takes." Renee explains that it was for Shecter's benefit, to scare him. She asks him again how far he was planning on going and he says that it doesn't matter now. She thinks that it does, since she just put her career on the line and she'd like to know whom she's dealing with. Jack answers, "You read my file." Renee says it doesn't tell her how he justifies the things that he's done. Jack gets pissy and says he's sick of answering questions about his past. He says that he agreed to do things her way, but now that the bureau is compromised that's not an option. They have to do things his way now. He asks her if that's a problem. "We'll see." 9:42:40.

9:48:43. Henry and HSSA arrive at Roger's girlfriend's workplace. Samantha Roth gets a phone call from reception saying there's a secret service agent there for her. She follows the agent outside to some kind of balcony and greets Henry. She apologizes for the fact that they haven't spoken since Roger's funeral. he gets right to the chase and says he knows about the $400,000 in an off-shore account. He accuses her of hiding something about his son's death for the money. She pauses and explains that the money is her aunt's and she put it in an account to hide from the IRS. Henry doesn't believe her and as she turns to go, he grabs her arm. HSSA steps in and tells Henry they need to go. And he and the other agent lead him away, he says that he's going to find out what she's hiding from him.

Tanner calls Tony from the car to tell him he's clear. Tony tries to get information out of him about the next job, saying he needs to prep his men, but Tanner says he'll explain when he gets there in just a minute. Tony has Masters start the deletion program on the computers while they pack up the hideout. Jack follows Tanner to the docks and pulls over when he thinks Tanner's going to make them. He gets out of the car and looks around while Renee rummages around in the trunk. She hands Jack a gun and they go after Tanner. Tanner's about to ring the buzzer for the gate when he hears something and draws his gun. He walks around some stacks of boxes until Renee walks out from behind a stack. He points his gun at her, but Jack comes up behind him and puts his gun to Tanner's head. He disarms Tanner and chokes him while asking if Tony's on the boat. He begins to punch Tanner when Renee stops him and says the device is the priority and they have to move in now. Jack stops, stands up, and then delivers a swift kick to Tanner's head for good measure.

They head towards the boat and Jack spies a security camera. He looks around and finds a towel to wrap around the muzzle of his gun as a makeshift silencer and takes out the camera. Tony notices and sends someone to check on it. Jack uses Tanner as a human shield as he walks down the ramp to the boat. The guy sent to check on the camera fires and hits Tanner. Renee covers Jack and takes out the guy. As they move onto the boat, Masters comes out and shoots at them. They shoot back and he goes down. They move inside, splitting up. Renee finds the computer already in the process of deleting the files. She can't stop it.

Jack moves through the boat. He opens a door and Tony pops out, catching him by surprise and making a break for it. Jack chases Tony outside and yells at him to stop. Tony stops and turns to face him. Jack is caught off guard; it's one thing to see a picture of your dead friend alive, it's quite another to see him in the flesh. Tony takes advantage of Jack's shock and runs. Jack shakes himself out of it, runs after him, and executes tan awesome flying tackle. They scuffle for a bit until Jack pins Tony up against a crate. Renee jogs up and says the device is gone and the computers wiped. "Where is it?!" Jack screams. Tony remains silent. Then Agent Ass shows up! In a helicopter! Even though Jack and Renee had it taken care of, thanks! And way to be late to the party, dude. Jack releases his hold on Tony since Renee has her gun trained on him, steps back and just stares at his friend. 'What happened to you? What the hell happened to you?"
