And the Eleventh Doctor Is -

- Matt Smith.

Matt Smith is 11!

Today, the BBC announced the youngest ever Doctor (yes, younger than Peter Davison) will be 26 year-old Matt Smith.

A relative unknown, Matt Smith does have a Whoniverse connection.  He's acted with Billie Piper (Rose Tyler) in both The Shadow of the North and Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

The head of drama at BBC Wales, Piers Wenger, described that Smith "had that 'Doctor-ness' about him."

David Tennant, the very popular Tenth Doctor, will exit the TARDIS as of October 29th, 2009, and says of Smith, "[his] life is about to change in so many ways".

This is yet another major change for the Whoniverse this year: the announced departure of show-runner Russell T. Davies and Doctor David Tennant after the 2009 specials, with Steven Moffat and Matt Smith taking over as the head writer/executive producer and the Doctor, respectively, as well as the exit of Catherine Tate as the fan-favourite companion, Donna Noble.

I can't wait to see how he

I can't wait to see how he does, though that means Tennant will be gone, and that I can certainly wait for. But, I haven't been disappointed with Eccleston or Tennant, so I just have to trust this guy does have that 'Doctor-ness" that will make him just as loveable as those before him.

Also, Spy, When are we going to get a recap of the Christmas Special? I can't wait for it. :D:D

I will be recapping the Christmas special, as soon as it airs on this side of the pond. I'm also going to be doing SJA, season 2, whenever it airs. I'm risking the beloved institution that is Sarah Jane.

As for Smith, I'm actually, the best term for it, relieved at the choice. Without any preconceived notions, he has a better chance of filling the role without all the drama. With the Tennant love, there will be enough drama and this poor guy doesn't need any more.

I'm sorry, so sorry. :D:D

I guess because the last series each episode aired here about three weeks after it aired in England, it seemed like the recaps were at the same time, or something. Do you know when it airs here?

I'm waiting impatiently, but it doesn't seem that it'll air for a few months at least.

He's younger than Gareth

He's younger than Gareth David-Lloyd. Which means little if anything but is an interesting factoid in my mind, seeing as how most folks who watch both DW and TW think of Ianto as soooooo young. No significance per se. Just an observation.

He certainly has the right look to be the next Doctor but there is very little chance he'd want a Companion like Martha or Rose. Donna, maybe, but she'd go all maternal on him. Or maybe not. I've never seen Smith except in stills. (BTW, what's with all the Smiths and Joneses in the Whoniverse, anyway?)

I think Sci Fi in the US is waiting to air the special until there's more than just the one to air. They seem particularly stubborn about that. The only one-shots they seem to like are their own. Which generally suck. I'm counting a bit more on BBCA grabbing it for after the finale of S04 which they're running every Saturday now. They're up to "Silence in the Library" tonight.

We need the children of Indonesia and the Philippines to manufacture our freedom of choice.

I'm just happy it's not

I'm just happy it's not going to be that guy from Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways.

Hope you don't stick around

Hope you don't stick around too long Smith!!!
This is the worst casting choice they could have ever come up with for new Doctor - not helped by the fact that every time Matt Smith cropped up on Confidential i wanted to hit him in the face. He comes across as pretentious and smug and in my opinion really doesn't fit the character of the Doctor.
After months of been teased about top draw actors taking over the role, especially the Next Doctor David Morrissey rumour, who would have been amazing as the Doctor and really done the part justice we have a freaky looking kid who i really can't believe in as the Doctor.
I can safely say as far as i'm concerned the series has gone on an extended hiatus and i won't be watching any of the 2010 series onwards until the Eleventh Doctor is thankfully killed off and we get a half decent Twelfth Doctor!
The only plus would be if in his regeneration story the Eleventh Doctor has a tragic accident making him regenerate into the Twelfth in his debut story.
This casting has just ruined the fantastic character of the Doctor and spat in the face of Doctor Who's impressive legacy. Thanks!!!

I don't know

Well that was certainly *not* what I thought might happen.

But I have to agree with Spy - I don't know the guy, nor have I seen him in anything else, so I can go in with a blank slate in regard to his portrayal of the Doctor.

However I will say that I am tad concerned about his age - unless he can pull off "old person in a young body" really well then I don't foresee him going back to visit any former companions - because I don't know how they (and we) could take the situation seriously (and goodness knows Captain Jack would just be scary....)

So in the end, I’ll give Mr. Smith and the new production team a good while to get things together. Bringing in Mr. Moffat and a new lead is going to change the entire tone of the series. So I'll wait and see how things work themselves out.

I haven't watched all of the confidential yet, but from some of the pictures I've seen I demand a haircut STAT!

I'm willing to wait and see.

I'm willing to wait and see. They've cast well in the past and Moffat's good at picking people who suit him.

I'll miss your recaps

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed and will miss your recaps. So much so, I continued to read your Numb3rs recaps long after I stopped watching the show. Your Doctor Who recaps were fantastic, and the one for Journey's End, which I just reread recently, made me cry all over again.

Once again, thank you and good luck. And much like Donna, you deserved a better fate.

Did you just compare me to Donna? I'll take that as the ultimate in compliments!

BBC has ruined Doctor Who

I'm sorry but ever since BBC canceled Doctor Who in the first place they've only been stupid with it. First it was that terrible movie I refused to admit happened, then they "revive" it but don't make sure the actors will stick around! Eccleston could have lasted as long as Tom Baker! Instead he left after one series! Now we've lost another Doctor. We are running out of regenerations. How are they going to fit in River Song and The Valyard(?). River recognized Tennent but now he's gone... I'm just not sure they even care anymore.
