The original maverick--Jack Donagy--is back from his government job (though not at liberty to say how he got out of it) and ready to claim his old position from Devon. He runs into Liz strolling to work in a fancy, very un-Lemon-like ensemble. She explains that the adoption agency is doing her at-home evaluation today, and she wants to make a great impression. So great, she even got rid of her Colin Firth movie collection in case they consider it erotica.
The dynamic duo of Devon and Cathy are still in charge at 30 Rock. Devon balks when Jack demands his old job back and instead offers him a position in the mailroom, which Jack accepts. The last time Jack worked his way up the corporate ladder it took him 22 years; he confides in Liz that he thinks he can pull it off in nine this time around.
Jenna flaunts a residual check from her Japanese commercial, and says she's going to buy everyone a gift--some new boots for herself. Tracey rolls in with his entourage and trumps Jenna's check with one of his own. Seems his video game was a huge hit, selling 61 million copies at $61 each. Jenna's little wheels get turning, and she points out the Tracey didn't make the game himself.
The adoption interviewer, Bev (Megan Mullally), is at Liz's apartment and grills her on everything from her sexual background to her work life. Liz admits she works 60-80 hours a week, and Bev decides she must visit Liz on the job since it's such an important part of her life.
Liz rushes to work to prep the gang before Bev's arrival. She pleads with them to put their porn away and be normal for one day. Jenna hides Liz's penis pasta, and Pete turns the green room into a makeshift nursery. In the midst of Liz's panic, Jack tells her that while delivering Cathy's Soap Opera Digest, she touched him in his 'swimsuit area.' If he goes with her advances, he can surely get his old job back. Jenna also adds to the drama, complaining to Liz that Tracey hasn't compensated anyone for their work on his video game. Liz prods Tracey to gift everyone who helped with his video game by saying Lil Wayne buys his entourage diamond watches whenever he has a hit single.
Jack mentors some mailroom employees in Central Park and runs into a disheveled Devon exiting a sex meet-up. Devon appears to have gone crazy and reveals his plans to shut down all of GE. Jack rushes back to the studio, convinced he has to take over the company by sleeping with Cathy.
Bev begins her tour of the studio. One thing after another goes wrong as she interviews Jenna, Pete, Frank and Cerie and they all say the wrong things. Tracey arrives and begins distributing gift for the gang. Gold nunchucks to Frank, a chinchilla coat to Pete and a coupon for free hugs to Jenna, which she is not happy about and threatens to sue Tracey.
When Devon shows up unexpectedly, Liz instructs Kenneth to distract him. Kenneth (who we hardly saw this ep!) keeps Devon at bay by showing him how many-push-ups he can do while Liz rushes upstairs to save Jack. Apparently, things were getting hot and heavy; Jack reveals Cathy put strawberry lip gloss on him to make him her 'fancy boy.'
Things continue to unravel in the studio, Bev walks in on Fred tearing down the fake nursery, and when Jack tries to step in and charm Bev, Cathy see and attacks in a it of jealousy. To top things off, Bev suffers a concussion thanks to Frank smacking her in the head with his gold nunchucks.
However, as Bev lies passed out, Liz has the opportunity to peek at her adoption evaluation. It ain't so pretty, so when Bev wakes up and has forgotten having already done the evaluation, Liz is ecstatic. She gets a do over!
Despite the second evaluation going perfectly, Bev explains to Liz that with her job, she isn't the ideal candidate for adoption. After a heartfelt speech where Liz says her life will open up and make room for the baby, the same way her heart will, Bev gets on board and says she'll reconsider. Then she immediate re-introduces herself and says she's ready to start the evaluation. Liz finally relents that it's time to take Bev to the hospital.
Jonathan alerts Liz that Jack's about to get down to business with Cathy. Liz busts into Cathy's office and finds them on the couch. Jack points out that Cathy's favorite soap is playing on the TV, and they begin to play into Cathy's soap opera obsession by acting out a fake storyline. Cathy loves it so much that she hires Jack as her personal adviser, taking control away from Devon (adios Will Arnett!).
At episode's end, Liz sadly laments she has to start to adoption process all over again with a new agency. As she exits Jack's office, freshly back to order just as it was before, Liz takes one last look at him and sweetly says she likes seeing him in there.
