Step It Up & Dance: Major League Broadway (Episode 5)

The key to this week's challenge? Apparently, it's Jason Alexander, formerly of "Seinfeld" and currently the artistic director of a theater company which just put on a production of "Damn Yankees". I wonder what the challenge would be? That's right, it's musical theater (groan), which is good news for Broadway vets Cody and Mochi but what does this mean for everybody else?

For the audition, the dancers learn an "80's funk number" version of the show's former ho-down showstopper "Shoeless Joe From Hannibal, Mo." Oscar thinks he has it in the bag, as he's done touring versions of Broadway shows (Cats!) but an exhausting audition process (25 8-counts!) puts him in the losing team with Michael and Miguel.

Imagine my surprise.

Meanwhile, the ladies pair off -- Janelle with Nick, Mochi with Cody -- to create a winning team of two couples who will take a stab at the sultry "Whatever Lola Wants". I have to wonder, though -- what if the girls had been in the losing group? Would the judges have wanted two all-male couples for the Lola number? Ooh, the mind it boggles.

The rehearsals go well for the winning team, though Janelle's lack of partnering makes her jumps a bit less graceful. Also, she does that annoying girl thing where she bitches about how fat she thinks she is. Her partner Nick is just grateful to be in the winning group for once.

Meanwhile, the eliminination group is (understandably) cranky and disbelieving. Not their best rehearsal, and Michael has a monster tantrum when Janelle questions his desire to stay. In the end, though, the tension between Michael and Oscar & Miguel manifests itself in a hot hot mess onstage. The judges even give them a second chance to do the routine which the boys are reluctant to take. In the end, though Miguel bore the brunt of the resentment from Oscar and Miguel, it was Oscar (and his inability to stay on beat) who is sent packing.

Note: Nick professed to missing Tovah's femine touch after her elimination in "Gotta Have Rhythm". Did he really miss her housekeeping skills or was he trying to feel up on her booty? Just wondering.
