Aliens in America: Community Theater (Episode 13)

Justin lights Franny's candle.: Wait a second... ew!Justin lights Franny's candle.: Wait a second... ew!Franny's calendar tells her that Justin leaves for college in 500 days, which is barely enough time to get them registered for mother-sun yoga. Missing the connection they had when Justin was small enough that she could get wear him in a sling while doing her gardening, she convinces Justin to join the crew for a community theater production of "Rent" while she joins the chorus of the same. Which pleases Gary, as being on the crew is less gay than being in the cast. Hold that thought, Gary.

Of course, the cute lead, a college girl named Zoe, convinces Justin to audition. Though he barely croaks "Three Blind Mice", Justin wins the lead and extra time learning his lines with Zoe. Zoe's college girl apartment, with its alley couch and ramen, is paradise to Justin. Even better, Zoe likes talking to him. Justin feels emboldened by what he thinks are feelings of maturity. Naturally, he fucks it up when he tells his friends that he hooked up with Zoe and Zoe finds out. Zoe storms out on Justin, just in time for Franny to take the lead. Does she kiss Justin during their tender duet, "Light My Candle"? Of course -- a sweet, motherly peck on the cheek. Aw.

Meanwhile, Claire is doing cheerleading-mandated community service. Using her childhood dream name, "Guinevere", she volunteers for the teen hotline. Sadly, the teen hotline is all mouth-breathing perverts until a junior by the name of "Doug" wins her over with tales of abuse from his father, and eventually the feelings and isolation associated with being a teenager. Claire, after a few sputters, gives Doug great advice and they become friends. Of course, the friendship comes to a halt when it turns out Doug is really Raja, who wants to prove to Claire -- and the rest of the family, who doubt her ability to help others -- that she could do it. Of course, Claire is mad that Raja kept lying, but they make up by the time Franny and Justin make their stage debut.

And Zoe? Zoe forgives Justin, who makes up with her after the show instead of attending the cast party. They talked sure, but that's all a newly mature Justin will own up to.
