Aliens in America: Mom's Coma (Episode 11)

They say you should appreciate the here and now, because you never know when your mom is going to get you tickets to the "Sound of Music" sing-a-long in Milwaukee. Justin is cheesed about that, but is powerless to stop Franny, especially when the 90 year old Wilsons are still ateending. And why is Franny driving them to school that morning? Raja didn't want to ride in the dirty schoolbus, but Justin would rather suffer some dirt than incur the wrath of Trey, the school's worst bully and its best crafter of obscure weaponry. Before he can let loose on Justin with his tonfa, Principal Duncan stops what doubtless would have been quite an assault to see

While shopping for some baseball memoribilia, Franny dings a hybrid in the parking lot. There is no damage, but she leaves a note anyway, having been chastened by raja's moral authority. Which, apparently, extends to the DVR -- no fast-forwarding through commercials. Which I kinda get but if that's how you feel about it, you can always turn down the sound during the adverts (which my former roommate Molly got me doing).

Back at school, Justin hides from Trey, going so far as to eat his lunch in the toilets (a classic of teen nerds in high shool movies, for sure). Trey finds him anway, and nearly gets his ears cut off by some ninja stars when an anonymous cute Asian boy breathlessly gives Justin a message about Franny being in an accident. Justin picks up the phone in Principal Duncan's office, and his fears are quelled -- she just wanted to know that she wouldn't be able to pick him up after school.

At home, Gary is worried that Franny's note is going to put them on the hook for more damage than she may have really incurred. He decides to check out the car, still parked in the lot, so he can swipe the note off. Of course while he's doing that, his own van rolls back and hits the car. Hard enough to knock off its fender and set off the car alarm. Awesome, Gary!

While Justin is moaning about Trey's future tortures, Raja wonders why Justin seems to get picked on. What is Justin doing that sets people off? Justin doesn't want to hear about it when he's got catapults to worry about. At school, Trey is no longer feeling bad about Franny's accident, and wants to fight him after school. When Justin lies that Franny's in a coma, Trey backs off. Justin can't resist twisting the knife a little deeper, saying that as long as he's alive his mom might prevail. Raja's bothered but Justin is totally not. When Raja protests, Trey reappears to defend Justin, forcing Raja to lie to save him from a wooden sword beatdown.

The hybrid owner? Sent a lengthy fax (and on that single roll of paper that's used by older fax machines, natch) demanding that she pay $1500 in damages. Outraged, she rants to Gary who, by the way, obviously didn't tell her about the damage he did. Like I said, Gary: AWESOME.

Trey finds Justin, Raja, and the geek patrol in the cafeteria, demanding to know how Franny is doing. He was thoughtful to steal her a card, and gift her with a steel angel he made in metal shop -- she can hang it over her hospital bed! In the face of that much menacing sympathy, Justin can only run... right into the hallway, where Franny appears. She's picking up the "Sound of Music" tickets Justin keeps forgetting to pick up. Huh, knew those tickets would be important. Meanwhile, Dooley? Has got no game.

Justin keeps up the lie, and Raja helps him, telling Trey that Franny liked the angel he made. Franny, who is alive and well and going to get security video footage from the mini-mall so she can fight back the hybrid owner. Trey, being nice (which is a lot like him not being nice), drives Justin and Raja over to the hospital for a visit. Justin slips Raja the angel so he can find a female patient over which to hang it, and kills time by having a heart-to-heart chat with Trey. Raja deposits the angel, and beats a hasty exit by claiming to be overcome with emotion. Justin keeps his distance from the stranger in room 22 while Trey doesn't hesitate to take her hand. The best Justin can do is pressing his finger to the patient's forearm.

Before Franny can watch the video, Gary confesses to the damage. Not only does the damage cut out, but Gary lied to her. He'd glady sell off his memorabilia collection -- if most of it wasn't fake. Turns out Franny had been counterfeiting most of his presents over the years.

At the hospital, Justin is busted when the patient, Mrs. Warner, started dying and the doctor needed a family member to approve further care. When Trey knocks him out, Trey's arrested, and Franny comes to Justin's aid. Just in time to take him to the sing-a-long. Aw.
