Mia's Engagement Party: The ladies argue over whose mate is more expendable. My money's on Jack (sorry, Mia!).I'm ignoring rating numbers for the pilot. I'm also avoiding advance buzz, hype, rumors, idle gossip, and hearsay about the show and comparisons to "Lipstick Jungle" (which I'm also recapping, natch). At least I will, until after I've watched episode 2 of CM, and then it's game on! As of right now, I think this show is adorable. Sure, New York City is once again reduced to a whirligig of luxury brands, expensive restaurants, and plentiful parking spaces, but who cares? It's the dirt, the drama, and the designers (clothes and accessories, of course) that count.
Mia Mason is a newly engaged publishing exec who has mere days to land a promotion at Barnstead Media Group. Mia's up for the challenge, and so is her fiance, who also happens to be her rival for the gig. When Mia wins the job, her man realizes that he can't be married to someone who is ambitious as he is (if not more so). Understanding that Mia won't give up hr career to stay at home and raise his kids, he breaks off the engagement. Miscellaneous observation: My guess is that she lives in Chelsea, as she walks to work, and her boss made a mention about their building being on West 23rd. How she does it stilettos, now that's anybody's guess.
Juliet Draper is the COO of a hotel group, mother to Emily the sulky teenage girl, and wife to Davis the roving husband. When confronted with the fact that Davis is having an affair with newly divorced socialite Cilla Grey, Juliet keeps her cool (though not excusing Davis this affair, nor the other out-of-town runs that had preceded it), and informs Davis that she'll be taking a lover of her own. Will she do it? One can only hope. Miscellaneous observation: In case you were wondering, yes, Miranda Otto did play Eowyn in the "Lord of The Rings" movies. And she was in that awful Lifetime mini-series with Debra Messing last summer.
Zoe Burden is an investment banker with an unemployed architect husband, an irresponsible possibly overpaid nanny, and an entitled personal assistant who appears to procrastinate worse than I do. She fires the nanny, but hubby can't look after the kids as he's just gotten a new job. So Zoe's a banker and her own nanny as well. Miscellaneous observation: Except for a scene where she's in a big meeting, Zoe dresses not so conservatively as I've seen those friends of mine who also work in finance at approximately the same level. Yes, I know it's television, but come on -- where are the blue button-down shirts with pin-striped skirts from Brooks Brothers, accessorized with an oversized Louis Vuitton tote?
Last of the four is Caitlin Dowd, the bridge n' tunnel girl made good, working as a designer for a brand that, for all intents and purposes, could be Ralph Lauren. When sparks fly with a new ad rep who just happens to be female, could years of dating men be over after a few kisses? Only time (and possibly Ellen Degeneres) could tell... Miscellaneous observation: Only character who may actually not live in Manhattan. She does have a car. Also, has a slight fake Brooklyn accent. Yes, I can tell that, too.

Hoping for more
Was finally excited to watch a new episode of something! However, this show just didn't do it for me. Boring and predictable. So obvious that Tom Everett Scott was going to leave Lucy's ass. Shame on Darren Star. He should stop trying to do "Sex and the City" remakes and concentrate on trying to do a remake of "Melrose Place." Now that's a show i'd watch!
