rewind! recap! regurgitate!: The Hills: "Love is not a maybe thing."

After 8 months of love on "The Hills", Heidi is tired of Jordan treating her badly. He yells, he's not nice to her, doesn't treat her like the princess she feels she is. Over lunch, Heidi relates this to Audrina, who expresses the sort of dull concern I've come to expect from someone who seems dull in comparison to her heavy eye makeup.

Later that day, Heidi heads over to Audrina's -- she's barely in the door when we see that she's having a fight with Jordan on the phone. Once she hangs up, Heidi crumples and wonders why Jordan yells at her. Though she'd expressed a feeling of freedom at lunch, now she feels broken down. I feel really bad for her, and I immediately think "Oh, I know what'll cheer me up! Blaine from Teen Vogue in the next scene!"

But alas, no Blaine, not this week, anyway. Just Lauren giving Whitney the Heidi/Jason scoop. Also, they dish on her birthday surprise -- why does she leave out the whole awkward fight she and Jason had when she described her birthday night at The Standard? Whatever -- back to Heidi. Where will Heidi go, if not with Jordan, when summer comes round?

Heidi and Jordan talk one more time before she makes her decision. Jordan resents that he has to cater to Heidi, which Heidi counters by saying she caters to him as well. He doesn't deny this, but doesn't stop, defending his behavior as an expression of passion and will not change. He goes out, scoffing when Heidi says she'll see him tomorrow (and not that night for some sleepover action). Heidi goes to bed with Bella the birthday Chihuahua, locking the door for the night.

The next day, after a super-lovey lunch with Jason, Lauren has news to share with Whitney while they hang up all manner of cute-ass outfits in the Teen Vogue fashion closet. -- she and Jason are looking at houses to rent for the summer! In Malibu! Exciting, but if Heidi and Jordan aren't together by then, and the girls' lease is over for the summer, where will Heidi live?

That night over dinner at Café Sushi, Lauren and Heidi have a heart-to-heart. Neither of them can make sense of why the relationship isn't working, but Lauren boils it down to two questions that only Heidi can answer for herself: is the relationship working? And is she absolutely in love with Jordan? Heidi whispers, but the answer is clear: "No."

Jordan comes over the next day to find Heidi near tears, with all of his stuff packed in boxes. Their breakup is probably the nicest conversation they've had with each other all episode. She can't do it anymore, he begs, he'll change, but she's done. Holding back tears, Heidi shows Jordan the door, before collapsing into Lauren's arms for a big hug.
